Can you miss something you never actually had?

Yes.
For my example we’ll use a car.
There’s a car for sale you want. You think about buying it but can’t for whatever reason. You think about driving and owning said car; taking it on badass roads and to the track. You imagine wrenching on it just for fun and not because it broke.
That car is sold not to you after a few weeks. You've thought about this car so much your brain thinks it's yours, or at least part of your brain does. Despite the dissonance, you still miss it.
